Clevedon BID boosted as town council matches funds

The £15,000 grant matches funding provided by North Somerset Council last year and will be used to pay for consultation and legal costs.

The BID will aim to boost trade among groups including the Hill and Sea Independent Traders (HASIT) and the Triangle Traders by creating better transport links, increasing marketing and improving the visual appearance of the town.

Money would be raised through a levy based on individual businesses’ rateable value.

John Fox, chairman of Triangle Traders, said: “The BID will enable us to establish a very firm footing for a proper business partnership with significant funds to improve the marketing and promotion of the town and instigate street enhancement projects that will improve the shopper experience in order for more people to come, stay longer and come back again and again.”

Chris Tucker, HASIT chairman, added: “Myself and other traders in the HASIT area have been looking for a collaborative partnership solution for a number of years and the BID seems to fit the bill.

“A priority project for us is to increase circulation of seafront and pier visitors up to shops on the hill and even the Triangle.”

A presentation was given by BID members to Clevedon Town Council which says it may earn ‘millions’ for the town.

Town council chairman Jane Geldart said: “This enables businesses to potentially reach their goal of a self-financing business partnership that will focus on improving trading condition in the town centre, Hill Road and seafront areas.

“The council was delighted to make this investment given it catalyses £400,000 of new investment over the next five years and quite probably millions over the next couple of decades.”

The BID committee is also working closely with the Clevedon Chamber of Commerce on the plans ahead of a referendum expected
to be held in January or February next year.
